Roadworthy
Line a number plate up in the box. Find out whether the vehicle is taxed and has an MOT — and if it isn't, report it without retyping anything.
Check
The camera is optional — type the plate instead and the whole app still works.
Fill the box with the plate, or type it. Only what is inside the box is read, so a shop sign or the car in the next bay is not mistaken for the one you are checking. Private and dateless plates work, and motorcycles have their own box shape.
History
Every MOT on record — each pass and fail, the mileage at each test, and every advisory in the tester's own words. The part of a used car's past a seller need not mention.
A failure and the retest that fixed it are shown as one MOT, because that is what they are. You also see how far it went between tests, and any period it spent with no MOT at all.
Costs
What the vehicle costs to tax for a year, worked out from the legislation rather than a summary of it — including the bands that stopped applying to cars registered after April 2017, and the ones that never applied to a car registered before March 2006.
And for a car an employer provides, the company car tax band. You supply the P11D value, because it depends on the options fitted to that exact car and no source publishes it.
Save
Keep your own vehicles with expiry warnings, and check their insurance on MIB's own service.
Report
When a vehicle genuinely is untaxed or genuinely has no MOT, the details are assembled for you. Untaxed goes to DVLA; no MOT goes to your police force, since only they can act on it. Either way you review it, and you submit it.
Privacy
Photographs never leave your device — plates are read on the phone itself, and there is no account. Tax and vehicle details go straight from your phone to DVLA; MOT history passes through a small server we run, which receives the registration and nothing else. See the privacy policy for the detail.
